Arriving at Thanksgiving

Untitled-1It was a clear, crisp morning, just ripe for adventure and discovery. I sat sipping my coffee in the observation deck (more like a room than deck) while waiting for the Delta flight carrying my son Michael to take off. When others came to do the same, I left my seat and pressed my face against the glass, my coffee steaming the window in front of me. I longed for a look at my son’s plane but it was at a gate that this “deck” couldn’t observe. So I watched the landings and takeoffs of other planes, and thought…

Changes will mess with you.

A melancholy mood tried to fog my emotions; much like the haze my hot coffee made, temporary clouding the tarmac from my view. I thought of two of my sons, away from our family at Thanksgiving and how I will miss them. My thoughts are interrupted by a little boy of four or five, excitedly begging his mom to stand and watch the airplanes land.

“Mom…don’t you want to see?” He asks

Another large Jet lands and so does a new thought…I begin to see.

Life is full of transitions…arrivals and departures.

Family life is full of comings and goings and a father is much like air traffic controller. We see to the departures and we tend to the arrivals. We deal with hearts and dreams and the flights of both…we must be ready to let them soar. I could dwell on loss, on lack or what I simply don’t have…or I could choose something different.

I can arrive at Thanksgiving

It's amazing how those spots are being filled by other folk who need a place. While I'll miss them, I know they are blessing another family. Thanks Bill!

Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

Our perception makes all the difference sometimes. Perception can help us "Rejoice in the Lord ALWAYS".

I know I've often needed my perception changed...so glad God helps us do that.

Have a blessed holiday!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, Jay, and thanks for this beautiful message. This will be my first holiday ever without my daughter as she will be out of state visiting with her husband's family. I will so take your words to heart, too, as my father has Alzheimer's and this could be his last Thanksgiving with us.
I found your blog courtesy of a tweet from Dusty R. Is God good, or what? :) Hope you will visit me at my blog when you have a moment. http://marthaorlando.blogspot.com
Blessings!

My wife's father past away in October and it will be strange without around
the table for sure. We are grateful for all the years he shared his life with us though. Praying for you during this season! BTW, I went and visited your blog...it was a great visit!

Our tribe of ten will still be no match for your umpteen, even with a couple of missing members. Pieces of the dinner already coming together and a mix of family tensions and joy shaping a really warm Thanksgiving in the hills of Deep Rivers ranch. Blessings abundant on all the cooks of Cookingham.

LOVED the post, Jay! Perfectly done.

And I too will be missing, my three sons far away out West this Thanksgiving. Yet giving thanks for the bonds of love that keep us close at heart.

All blessings to you and Christine and the children.
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Awesome analogy, Jay. How true! Early this morning as I sat alone I was pondering this very subject; change. I know now that it wasn't by chance... Change - It's part of our lives and yet we fight it all the way to the end... which is the last change.

As a dad I too have to fight my melancholy moods and its affect. I too will use your words to seek the will along with peace and joy from our Father even as we muddle through the uneasy changes in life.

Happy Thanksgiving, brother. God bless you and yours. Praying for the boys...

Thanks Floyd! Being a sentimental softy, I often have these strong feelings of family and the ties that keep us together. Yet, those ties should be flexible to allow for their adventures to begin.

Have a blessed day my friend!
